Buffalo Bills lose heartbreaker to Patriots

Buffalo Bills lose heartbreaker to Patriots Monday night’s season-opening game between the Bills and Patriots was designated as an “AFL Legacy Game” signifying the NFL’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the American Football League. And in a game reminiscent of some of those wild, topsy-turvy affairs that helped make the AFL the success it was in the 1960s, the Patriots pulled out a victory that only the Bills — OK, maybe the Cincinnati Bengals, too — could have allowed them to steal.
In another colossal collapse on Monday Night Football, the Bills blew a 24-13 lead in the final two minutes and lost a gut-wrenching — but not unbelievable because they are, after all, the Bills — 25-24 decision to their arch rival. Remember the incredible way the Bills lost to Dallas two years ago on a Monday night, which in an eerie coincidence was by the identical 25-24 score? Well, this one was just as sickening. So sickening that it had tough-as-nails safety Donte Whitner in tears afterward.

“It’s really tough,” Whitner said, pausing to wipe tears from his eyes. “Guys played really, really hard and we came up short and it hurt like hell. We just have to get ready for next week.” At least Whitner stood there and answered questions and shared his thoughts, as difficult as it was. Terrell Owens, who had only three balls thrown his way and caught two for 46 yards in a largely invisible Buffalo debut, left the locker room with only this parting shot to reporters: “You’re wasting your time guys, I’ve got nothing to say.”
