spain Vs Germany (1-0) 2008 Spain only won by a single goal in the final of Euro 2008, but even the casual observer will know that they totally outplayed Germany. The simple facts offer a window into the way the game panned out – Spain had four times as many shots on target as Joachim Loew’s men, and almost twice as many total efforts on goal. Even still, this does not tell the whole story. When you have one man alone up front – as Spain did with goalscorer Fernando Torres – the onus to get shots away is shifted towards midfielders breaking from deep. The quartet of Xavi, David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas like to pass the ball into the back of the net, much like the latter’s club Arsenal. While this makes for great entertainment, it is frustrating for fans and no doubt outgoing coach Luis Aragones. Granted, Germany had more of the overall possession – but that was always going to be the way once the counter-attacking Spaniards went a goal up just after the half hour. Furthermore, when they did have the ball Germany were lumbering and unimaginative. They were unable to get enough of it to Bastian Schweinsteiger and they always looked hesitant at the back, with Per Mertesacker particularly out of his depth. Indeed, you felt that Spain would be able to score with every attack, while Germany rarely threatened a confident Iker Casillas, who has even looked good on crosses in this competition.
